Your most valuable tool while traveling in Mexico and looking for a safe and comfortable hotel is information. In Mexico perhaps more than in other places, everyone is likely to tell you what you want to hear, rather than all of the pertinent details. This is especially true if they are promoting a hotel or destination.

Because of its proximity to the United States, Sonora has many established routes of drug- and human-trafficking from Mexico into the U.S. For the most part those who are involved in those activities have not targeted tourists, and the much-publicized violence has involved conflicts between cartels, or between cartels and law enforcement. Still, you want to minimize the time you spend in potentially dangerous areas and take appropriate precautions when traveling in Mexico.

Tourism is very important to the state of Sonora, and it spends a great deal of time and effort to ensure the safety of visitors. And even though the violence always gets the headlines, the reality is that it is relatively rare, and that the people of Mexico are very friendly and welcoming to strangers. I have been traveling in Sonora for more than 20 years, and have never had a situation where I felt threatened or otherwise in danger.
